What Does an Overhead Conveyor System Cost?
An overhead conveyor system is customized to each operation’s material flow, capacity requirements, and production environment. It is therefore not possible to provide a general price without first understanding the conditions. Here we describe the most important factors that affect the investment.
Factors That Affect the Price
- Track length and configuration. Rails, suspension, curves, switches, elevation changes, and installation affect the system’s scope.
- Number of stations and functions. Loading, unloading, assembly, lifting, and other functions affect the need for mechanics, product carriers, and control systems.
- Capacity and buffer requirements. Desired capacity, cycle time, and buffer volume determine track length, number of carriers, and system configuration, among other factors.
- Load weight and dimensions. System class, from Light Duty to Extreme Duty, is selected based on load weight, format, and handling requirements.
- Automation level and flow control. Manual or automated sections, Power & Free, identification, and other functions affect the system’s complexity.
- Control systems and integrations. Requirements can range from basic PLC control to full OCS DC with SCADA, data collection, and integration with other production systems.
- Installation and production environment. The building’s conditions, safety requirements, installation location, and the ability to carry out work in phases also affect the cost.
Cost Over Time, Not Just Investment
The investment cost is only part of the whole picture. OCS friction-based systems are chain- and oil-free and have low maintenance requirements. The section-based operation also makes it possible to adapt energy consumption to demand. Freed floor space also has significant value: space that does not need to be built, heated, or rented.
